Design

MyFonts
Anything you can imagine to do with typefaces - well organised, price comparison, font samples, tonnes and tonnes of useful stuff.

design for chunks
The last time you spewed on an airplane, were you satisfied with the aesthetic experience offered by the bag? Were you embarrassed to pull such an ugly receptacle over your snout? Never fear, intrepid motion sickness victim - Design For Chunks to the rescue!

designbooks
Reviews and news of books about design, art, photography, etc. Be careful, it's German.

fontscape
Another big fat font directory, but with interesting ways to find fonts, such as a search by mood.

the font pool
Not particularly well-designed, but a big, fat, useful catalogue of fonts.

wall of sites
A wall built of images, each image links to a well-designed site. Nothing else.

Diamond Way Buddhism

Diamond Way Aus
The site I designed and maintain for the Australian Diamondway Centres.

Lama Ole Nydahl
The official site of my Lama, one of the most interesting guys you're ever likely to meet. Especially interesting is "Special Days", a diary of what he's up to all over the world. I'm proud to translate bunches of German for the site and maintain and update it.

The 17th Karmapa
His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, the highest Lama of the Karma Kagyu Tibetan Buddhist lineage.

Flash

Tokyo Plastic
Damn. Many Flash sites are full of sexy scripting. Some are packed full of lovely bitmaps. But so often I have the feeling they don't understand Flash as a medium. Tokyo Plastic does, and shows the knowledge off with style, style, style. Turn your speakers up.

actionscript.com
A news and forum site for the actionscripting community.

domineydesign
Sexy example of how a professional site can be fun. I'm particularly fond of the transitions between sections.

flash guru
A daily checker. Regularly updated Flash MX news.

flash guru
Been wanting to leanr more Flash, so this bears looking at.

hoogerbrugge
Han Hoogerbrugge is an accoplished Dutch painter, sculptor and illustrator, who has thankfully learned how to Flash like a Master. He has a very distinctive style. All of his Flash toys are composed of one character, a self-portrait, usually in a black suit. Out of this simple element, he's managed to build an astounding collection of simple interactive haikus.

orisinal
Flash games by Ferry Halim - simple, poetic, enchanting. Updated with astonishing regularity (new sweet little game every week or two lately).

News which CNN couldn't report for years finally comes to light (NY Times article, requires rego)

The new Matrix trailer rocks my ass off. Wooo!

Unfortunate advertising: Hong Kong will take your breath (and maybe your life) away.

Patriot Act II, coming soon to a police state near you: disappearing U.S. citizens at will, wiretaps without court order, immigrant deportation without trial, stripping citizens of their citizenship, etc.

Unfortunate name? Unfortunately you can't fly, sir.

Friends

butterflow
Dirk Lehmanksi is an ex-colleague and a funny guy of many talents. Careful, it's German.

danyea
She adopted me as a brother, is one of the sweetest ladies around, and my only loyal reader. Thanks sis!

dynamic shit boy
Phil is a whiz with PHP, Actionscript, etc. Also a nice kid, but the Lego obsession could get out of hand.

pete
I used to design books for Pete's publishing company in Australia, now he's writing novels in “Nob-in-Gob” England. We've helped each other so much I've lost track of who owes who what.

pixelschubser
Pixelschubser can be translated as "pixel-pusher", that's André. He sits next to me almost all day, almost every day. He's a new father, so expect cutesy babdy snapshots. Oh, and be careful, it's German.

steppen
We are, as they say in Detschland, “cut from the same piece of wood.” But unlike me, he's Hamburg's, if not Germany's, best Feng Shui consultant. Site's German — don't say I didn't warn you.

Photography

28mm
More a photo mag than a photo blog, but it's mostly populated by submissions from photobloggers. Nice stuff, great idea.

confessionalism
Mostly black and white, mostly documenting campus life at UT Austin, mostly seen through a very good eye.

digital journalist
Articles and interviews by and for professional journalists.

exposur3
Simple, clean design which doesn't get in the way of the interesting and thoughtful photos.

gessaman
Adam Gessaman has developed his own little chunk of code which builds a very un-Movable Type photoblog, through Movable Type. Often nice pics, too.

grey expectations
Noah Grey is, in some parts of the web, a legend. His photos make me feel california all over.

halftone
Neal is fifteen years old and claims he "was cursed with emotional maturity at birth." However true this may be, he makes some nice photos.

holga mods
The Holga is a super-cheap ”toy“ camera that uses middle-format film. Holgas produce aesthetically trashy images which have made them popular with hobbyists and pros alike. If you have or want a Holga, this page is a great source of detail on how to modify yours to suit your desires.

jeff phillips
Intelligent, well-executed photos, and some smart and funny photo-essays.

marcnorth
Nice simple design, but the star is the photo blog. Mostly lovely black & white street scenes, with some colour for variety. Emotional, well-seen work.

photographyblog
News, links and reviews of all things photographic.

photojunkie
photojunkie takes some nice photos with not so nice cameras.

pinkheadedbug
Stunning street photography by John Brownlow, and insight into having the guts to get the shots.

redscreen
Jake Ingman makes some pretty pictures.

washington post
A comprehensive, regularly updated collection of news photography.

zone ix
Steven Noreyko is an Austin based photographer with a good eye who does some lovely things with colour.

Pixel Reading

Scribbles, photos, interesting and honest thoughts.

a list apart
If you're a web designer, you already read this.

accordian guy
The "me" blog of a very interesting "schmoozing, boozing, hacking, slacking bon vivant and goof".

antipixel
Jeremy Hedley writes "sort of live from Tokyo".

dooce
She gets worked up over silly shit and makes me laugh.

fark
Satire, news-like, can be hilarious.

fireland
Josh Allen writes tasty little stories which are usually a tad surreal, and often make me feel dirty. Sort of like being served a delicious meal, only to discover after the fact that it was spiced with bits of your own brain.

idle words
Sensitive, insightful writing, pleasant, sarcastic humour, and some charming paintings too.

kottke
Always good for an interesting read. Clear, fresh, non-frightening design.

memepool
Dip into a pool of strangeness.

mighty girl
Little observations, overheard conversations and thoughts from a San Franscisco girl. Usually funny.

odessatreet
Lee is a Yank writing from Paris. We tend to get on similar “damn America's looks weird/scary/funny from the outside” jags.

signal vs. noise
A company blog, which doesn't come across that way at all.

speckled paint
The surprising, funny, surprisingly funny p.o.v. of Josh. Sweet design too.

textism
Intelligent, arrogant, irreverent. Ex-pat Canadian enjoying life in a small town in France. Oh, and his dog's real cute, too.

the english manager
A limey living in Portugal. Sweet design, interesting read, hilarious self-portrait cartoons.

the morning news
Yes yes (you anal, bean-counting correctness freak you) it's not technically a blog. But it's not exactly news either, now is it? At TMN lots of people write lots of stuff, often about New York, more often than not funny, always good.

typographica
Possibly of little interest to many, but for designers a lovely journal of all things typographic.

what do I know
Todd Dominey re-designs about as often as I do which, if the designs weren't lovely and he didn't write interestingly about technology and life, wouldn't be enough to include him here.

über
Technically more a magaziny sort of thing than a blog, but also pretty bloggy. Well written, funny, thought-provoking, and really red. Ouch.

Tools

currency converter
Pretty simple — converts one currency to another.

leo de/en dictionary
A comprehensive dictionary of German and English, with usage examples for many words. On my heavy rotation tool list.

lorem ipsum
Generates and explains the origins and uses of latin gibberish texts used by printers and designers since the sixteenth century. I've filled countless screens with this particular gibberish, and had clients actually try and read it. Sheesh.

michelin maps
Good maps.

Travel

vagabonding
The travelogue of Mike Pugh, "an optimist from Chicago." Lots of lovely photos, simple, clear design, and a remarkable depth of content.

Waste Your Time

stick figure kung-fu theatre
Everyone's seen a Jackie Chan, Jet Li or some more obscure Hong Kong Kung Fu flick. They used to play on a Baltimore station every Sunday afternoon when I was a kid. What do you get if you do away with the molecule-thin plot, flashy costumes, colourful settings, actors and dialogue?
