It's remarkably cool.

I have the day off work, and am certainly not spending it sitting in front of a computer. So it's a no news day. Deal with it.

Some people have absolutely too much time on their hands. Thanks to Dirk for the heads up.

I never knew how upset some people are about Thanksgiving. If you're also upset, you can order some protest posters, or try the supposedly delicious Tofurky, and bring a little joy to the life of one of the over 40 million turkeys who die for us every year.

Every bathroom should have a window. A big sunny window that you can throw wide open to let the chill winter wind in, in case of emergencies. Our bathroom at work is very small, and has no window. Or exhaust fan. Imagine what I mean by "in case of emergency." Ech. Blech. Yuck.

It's already quite cold outside, but technically it's autumn, so take a look at this crazy bumpy pumpkin and be shocked and amazed at how messed up veggies can be. More on this series in my photo daybook.

On many servers I expect to find, from time to time, pages which are a little hidden, perhaps not even linked into a site, and which contain silly content. Dumb photos, poorly written rants, jokes. But I was rather surprised to see what the Photoshop amateurs at the CIA have been cooking up. If I was a terrorist, this would certainly strike fear into my heart - you betcha. Link spotted at Textism.

Anthrax. For a couple of weeks, it was the hottest news topic, and the scariest thing going on in the world. I say scariest because it wasn't like many of the small conflicts happening every day all around the world - in such conflicts the people know it's going on, and they have some idea of their chances of being affected. Anthrax randomly popping up in the post could hit anyone, as we saw. And now? Only a few weeks later, there haven't been any letters in the US for 9 days, and now you have to search on news sites to find mention of the whole thing. And we don't know anything substantial - where the letters came from, who sent them, why - nothing. Was it nuts on the extreme right using the whole Sept. 11 thing to take their swing at the government? Was it actually Islamic terrorists executing step 2 of their attack? Gah, the whole thing makes me shudder.

··· I'm open minded. I work in a creative business. I even consider myself an artist, sometimes. But doesn't it make you think of the fall of Rome when you see an artist who's big idea is to have people stamp their thumb prints on him while he walks around a gallery in clay undies? I mean come on. What a wank.

NOW HEAR THIS

Eternal Nightcap
The Whitlams

amazon.com >>
amazon.co.uk >>

The only place I know of where the Whitlams are at all known outside of Australia is, strangeley enough, Canada. I'm sure that's just a failure of marketing, as it surely has nothing to do with their talent. At times rocky, at times sad, at times sweet and poppy. Check their comprehensive site out, then buy all their cd's if you can find them.

EAT THIS BOOK

Lone Wolf and Cub
Kazuo Koike & Goseki Kojima

Finally published in English uncensored and in the original pockt-size Japanese format. If you like the movies of Akira Kurosawa, and are open-minded enough to read comics (I'm amazed by how many people still think comics are for kids, regardless of the plethora of literature quality comic book writing out there) check this out. If you've no interest at all in feudal Japan and all the samurai related posturing it includes, forget it. Beautifully drawn, well-paced stories, drama as only the Japanese can achieve when writing Samurai stories.

MONTHLY MOVIE
MADNESS

Amelie
Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet

A jaw-dropper of a film. Enchanting story, stunning cinematography, and the semi-surreal quirkiness you've come to expect from Jeunet. Although this film has its feet more firmly on the ground of reality than his previous efforts Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children it is still reality seen through a filter, and what a beautiful filter it is.
